Palm Springs, a desert city inextricably linked to mid-century modernism in the US. That is mostly down to the number of spectacular projects built by the Swiss architect Albert Frey here in the 1950s and 1960s. Frey II: The Architectural Interpreter is the second installment in filmmaker Jake Gorst’s extensive portrait of this remarkable designer and student of Le Corbusier. Part one, Frey: The Architectural Envoy, was screened at AFFR in 2018. Featuring archival images, photographs and interviews, the film paints a portrait of a man who lived as a hermit above the city that had so much to thank him for.
